BBS Celebrates National Engineer’s Week – February 16-22, 2020

BBS Architects | Engineers, a Des Moines-based architecture engineering firm, designs commercial buildings in Iowa. Its architects and electrical and mechanical engineers are one of a handful of companies in Iowa with these disciplines under one roof. Mechanical engineers are responsible for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning), plumbing, fire protection and building automation system design. Its electrical engineers design power, lighting, telecommunications and fire alarm systems.  And it sees some new industry trends in its 125 years in business. “HVAC systems both impact climate change and feel the impact,” says Holly Elbert, partner at BBS Architects | Engineers. “High and low temperatures require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep occupants comfortable. But the harder they work, the more energy they use, thus increasing their carbon footprint.”  Its HVAC engineers design buildings with more efficient systems to accommodate changes in weather, which is why they work with programs like ACE mentoring to continue to fill its pipeline with skilled and innovative people.   “The pace of the design and construction process continues to quicken,” Elbert says. “Buildings that used to take three years to design and construct are now finished in half that time. Though the basic design methods aren’t significantly different, the tools we use to communicate our design have undergone dramatic improvements — specifically 3D modeling and virtual reality.”
