Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company

Utah Farm Bureau Center

Construction Completed: 1997
Project Data: 40,000 SF
Construction Cost: $4.73 million

Client Need:
Situated in the foothills of the mountains of Salt Lake City, the Farm Bureau Center in Sandy City, Utah, is a regional office building for the Farm Bureau Insurance and affiliated companies.

BBS Approach:
Utilizing local natural materials and visual elements from the existing buildings within the community, the building blends harmoniously with its surroundings. The undulating terrain and opportunity to view the building from both high and low vantage points required particular attention to the shape and orientation of the building, including its roofscape.

Project Results:

  • 40,000 square foot, two story office building.
  • Masonry screenwall added to the roof added a “third story” and sheltered the penthouse and mechanical equipment from direct view.
  • Cross-axis provides the overall organization for the building;  main axis anchored at its two ends with ornamental steel stairs connecting upper and lower levels.
  • One leg of cross axis consists of a dramatic two-and-one-half story atrium with natural light filtered through clerestory windows above and framing a spectacular view of nearby mountains.
  • Nestled around the central atrium are both open and private offices, conference and meeting rooms, a wellness center, and a technology operations center, as well as future growth space.
