The Pedestrian Walkway project involved creating a protected path of travel between two shuttle bus stops, one at long term patient care building and the other at the main hospital entry.
The open air walkway canopy system is comprised of precast concrete walls, exposed structural steel framework, steel window wind breaks, and a translucent canopy overhead. The canopy structure was designed to incorporate various visual elements of the surrounding buildings, while projecting a new 21st century image for the VA Campus.
While traversing a difficult site, the walkway seamlessly meets the VA Barrier Free Design requirements while creating a light filled travel path and breakout seating areas for staff and veteran use. BBS performed architectural and electrical engineering design services and coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office.
